Rhine Gorge (Swiss Grand Canyon), Flims

What began as the Flims landslide has now become a unique natural backdrop. For 10,000 years, the Rhine has carved a path through the bedrock between Ilanz and Reichenau. The result is a ravine that is justly referred to as the Swiss Grand Canyon. The bizarre stone formations bordered by pine tree captivate train passengers, ramblers and river rafters from around the world.

Details

In Chur, take the Rhaetian railway and travel via Reichenau through the Rheinschlucht – Versam – Ilanz (36 minutes). Alternatively, alight in Versam after 23 minutes and enjoy the view from below.

To admire the canyon from above, take the Post Bus from Chur to Flims Waldhaus (around 32 minutes) and from there, hike for just under an hour through the fairytale Flims Forest to the "Swift / il Spir" viewing platform in Conn. The platform offers an impressive 180° panoramic view of the Rhine Gorge.

Special Tip

  • Take a horse-drawn carriage for the trip back from Conn to Flims Waldhaus.
